No, not the classic 1979 follow up to ‘In the Navy’ by Village People… nor the English pop duo from the 80’s/90’s, perhaps most famous for ‘The King Of Wishful Thinking’ from the soundtrack to Pretty Woman.
It is the story of your fearless leader, and his trusty partner in the Leeson Road* Collective, Glyn Bosanko. On Monday last, while the Seniors were doing battle with Christchurch, Glyn and I travelled to deepest, darkest Dorset to take on 70 of the finest pairs the South-West could muster.
Despite being held up by a contretemps between a lorry and a van on the Puddletown bypass, resulting in Glyn being delayed by an hour and a half, we arrived at Lyme Regis Golf Course, bathed in glorious sunshine with the benefit of a gentle cooling sea breeze.
For those that have not yet played this course, the views of the Jurassic Coast alone make it worth a visit. The course itself was in perfect condition, the greens super fast at around 10 on the stimpmeter, but running true if you could pick the right line.
However, I digress… the matter at hand was a better-ball pairs competition. Despite starting an hour later than planned, we dovetailed superbly, never scoring less than 2 points a hole, finishing with an amazing 47 points and snatching 1st pace by a single point! Top 24 results below:
After the golf, a delicious fish and chip dinner was greedily devoured before the long journey home, this time free from traffic problems. A satisfying end to an excellent day. Dorset may not have as many courses as some other counties, but it has some real beauties. 10/10.
*Unbeknownst to either of us at the time, we lived in Leeson Road, Bournemouth at the same time in the late 60’s.
