Since I last reported on the Seniors following the match against Canford School, we have had a busy run of matches. To say that results have been mixed might be an understatement.
Firstly we welcomed Avington Park to Somerley. A warm sunny day saw our seniors return to form, sending the Avington ‘Posho’s’ home on the back of a 6-0 defeat.
Next came Parley Court, who sadly could only bring three pairs. After 9 holes, we were comfortably ahead in two of the matches, but Norman and John were in a benevolent mood, managing to lose their game despite being 5 up with 7 to play… I said I wouldn’t mention it though! Final result was a 2-1 loss.
The following week we travelled to our farthest away venue, at Worldham Golf Club, in Alton. The course was in fantastic condition, and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves, even Nigel! Despite your fearless leader having to play on his own against their skipper and his partner, he managed a 2&1 victory! 3-3 seemed the right result on the day.
Another week, another trip up the M3, this time to Avington Park, just outside Winchester. They were more than pleased to gain their revenge, with only our Captain, more than ably assisted by Derek Helps, who took time out from his relentless schedule of playing all the Harry Colt courses in the south. A 5-1 defeat saw our boys crying into their beer at the after-match meal.
Finally, it was a pleasure to welcome Highcliffe Castle to our home for the inaugural match in what is hoped will be a long-lived association. Two-plus years in the making, a tight game ensued, with Somerley just on the right side of a 4-2 victory. I know many of us are looking forward to the return match at Highcliffe in 2022!
